Potassium Permanganate as an Oxidant in Homogeneous Catalytic Oxidative Desulfurization of Indonesia BioSolarTM

The Indonesia BiosolarTM has a high sulfur content (<2000 ppm) compared to the other standards such as EURO VI (<10 ppm). This high sulfur content can be economically detrimental because it damages diesel engine components and pollutes the environment. Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is an alternative method to reduce sulfur content in the fuel other than Hydrodesulfurization. ODS has operating conditions at low temperature and pressure so that it is economically better. This study aims to determine the role of Potassium Pemanganate as a strong oxidizing agent in reducing sulfur content. To determine the sulfur content before and after the ODS process, the FTIR method was used. ODS using potassium permanganate and acetic acid catalyst can reduce sulphur up to 28.12% with an oxidation time of 30 minutes.
